Collecting Olives – Palestine
The olive harvest’s season in West Bank starts around October and is an important element in Palestinian culture since it is a symbol of their connection to the land. The entire population can take part in the harvest and is an important income source for thousands of families in the area. Local economy depends partly on cultivation and marketing of olives, olive oil and other derivated products.
This year I had the opportunity to help in the gathering. There are many olive trees in the region and, as shown in the pictures, we were collecting olives with a small rake or only with our bare hands. The fabric was placed under the tree in order to gather the ones that were falling.
The olive is a symbol of peace but in recent times it has also become a subject of conflict and symbol of resistance.
