Colombians

My volunteering experience already finished. I have learned a lot and lived different experiences during these 5 months. I think that one of the most important things that have made this experience so valuable, are all the people I have gotten to know.

I think this is something human and something that repeats itself from childhood on, in my case I have always felt it in every group in which I have taken part: at school, in football teams and in general all experience that I could live and share with good people. Although sometimes we forget it and don’t pay much attention to it, in the end, we are social animals and our life has no sense without the rest of people.

But there is an important difference because this time I was in Colombia and it is exactly that what made it special, their people, Colombian people who are unique. Despite the image and information we receive in Europe about Colombia (I am not going to explain the Colombian stereotypes because we all know them…), reality is much more complex and various than it seems. Colombian people are in general very happy, very positive and have a great sense of humor. It is very common in a good atmosphere with a Colombian group that they joke (or ‘‘recochen’’ as they say) about everything. It helps to create natural, nice and relaxed relations. As usual they laugh a lot and enjoy life, maybe in part because the general situation is not the most favorable one and is a good way to bear with it.

I have also known very honorable, noble people, real friends. People who are with you when you need them, prepared to help you and be with you if necessary. Of course not everyone is like that, everywhere you find good and bad people. But I hadn’t had such a positive view about Colombian people before my volunteering than I have now and I think that this is because of the information we receive about this country, which is mainly negative. We don’t know the good things Colombia has to offer, and there are a lot. I prefer to remember all the good things and their people are a very good aspect. I feel lucky that I got to know them and enjoyed the time with them.

I can’t name all these good people here because they are many and I would forget some of them. But they know for the time we spent together that it was a pleasure to meet them and share conversations, stress, very good and not so good moments with them.

In the end, it is the people we share our life with, who make it worthwhile. So thanks to all the good Colombian people I have met during these months. All the best, see you friends…

Ya finalizó mi voluntariado en Colombia. Me llevo y he aportado muchas cosas durante estos 5 meses. Y creo que una de las cosas que más importantes y por la que más merece la pena haber vivido esta experiencia es por la gente que he conocido.

Esto es algo humano y que se repite desde la infancia, en mi caso en la escuela, en los equipos de fútbol en los que he jugado y en general en todas las experiencias que he podido vivir donde he conocido buena gente. Al fin y al cabo somos animales sociales y nuestra vida no tiene sentido sin los demás, aunque a veces nos olvidemos de ello o no lo tengamos muy en cuenta.

Pero hay una diferencia sustancial en el caso por haberse desarrollado en Colombia y es eso mismo, su propia gente que como es normal, es única. A pesar de la imagen que se vende y de toda la información que llega a Europa sobre Colombia (la cual no voy a describir porque creo que no se diferencia mucho en general y todos conocemos de sobra…), la realidad es mucho más compleja y diversa de lo que parece. La gente colombiana es en general muy alegre, muy positiva y tiene un gran sentido del humor. Es muy habitual que en un ambiente tranquilo con un grupo de colombianos se bromee (o se ‘‘recoche’’ como ellos dicen) sobre cualquier tema, lo cual facilita que las relaciones sean naturales, agradables y distendidas. Y como es normal les gusta reír bastante y disfrutar de la vida, quizá en parte porque la situación general no es la más favorable y esta es una buena manera de sobrellevarlo.

Y por otro lado, he conocido gente muy noble y muy honrada como amigos. Gente que está ahí cuando se la necesita, muy dispuestos a ayudar y acompañarte cuando es necesario. Por supuesto que no todos son así, en todos los sitios hay buena y mala gente. Pero yo antes de comenzar el voluntariado no tenía el buen concepto de los colombianos que tengo ahora después de conocerlos y creo que en parte se debe a la información que nos llega de Colombia que en gran medida es negativa. No se cuenta todo lo bueno que tienen este país, que es mucho. Pero yo prefiero quedarme con eso, con lo bueno, y su gente es algo muy bueno y que me alegro de haber podido conocer y disfrutar.

No puedo decir aquí el nombre de toda esa buena gente que he conocido porque son muchos y seguro que me olvidaría de algunos. Pero ellos saben por lo vivido en común, que ha sido un placer conocerlos y compartir risas conversaciones, tensiones, buenos y no tan buenos momentos juntos a ellos.

Al fin y al cabo, en gran medida es la gente con la se comparte la vida, la que hace que esta merezca la pena. Así que gracias a toda la buena gente colombiana que he conocido durante estos meses de voluntariado. Os deseo todo lo mejor, nos vemos amigos…
